Sonoma Distilling - Aromatherapy and Hydrosols
The Distilling Process
The distillation process we use is steam distillation. This process includes a boiler, a steam pot, a condenser and a separator. We load the steam pot with aromatic plants that have been selected, because of their right time to harvest. Each plant has its natural time to harvest depending on climate, soil, and what elements of the plant you are trying to preserve. At this point we inject steam from the boiler into the pot filled with plants. When the steam fills the pot, rising like water, it causes the glands of the plants to burst and release the oils and essence of the plant into the steam. The steam flows up into the top of the condenser and down into the condenser tubes, which becomes liquid, or hydrosol. This hydrosol carries the oil and flows into the separator where the oil, bubbles to the top and is taken off. The hydrosol is taken off and put into separate containers. The hydrosol is quite valuable, it contains micromolecules of the plant. It is a combination of plant and water and one cannot be separated from the other.
